Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for PhDs and Post-docs jointly funded by Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT), Ningbo and Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The PhD candidate and Post-doc will be located at both EIT and PolyU under the primary supervision of Professor Dongxiao Zhang (Provost & Executive Vice President of EIT, Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering) and Professor Jinyue Yan (Chair Professor of PolyU, Academician of European Academy of Sciences and Arts), and will be co-supervised by Assistant Professor Yuntian Chen.
Cities are responsible for an estimated 67-76% of global energy use and contribute three-quarters of global carbon dioxide emissions. Digital technology is an important instrument for the energy transition and an enabler of two key industry trends: decarbonization and decentralization. The increased temporal and spatial mismatches between supply and demand call for the novel development of flexibility of an urban system operating procedures, including real-time forecasting, faster scheduling, and ancillary services with more active engagement of energy efficiency and energy storage on the demand side. Instead of being static, a radical transformation to handle dynamic balance and accommodate more intermittent renewable energies with enhanced demand responses is required, to further improve the efficiency, flexibility, and resilience of energy systems.
The PhD & Post-doc Positions will participate in R&D focusing on AI & Urban Energy Systems. The candidates will be supervised by, and work directly with, leading Energy & AI researchers. The successful candidate will conduct the research the following relevant topics (but not limited to) :
- Advanced forecasting of renewable energy sources (PV, wind) integrated with weather data
- Advanced demand-side response and management
- Distributed energy system modeling including transfer learning, online learning, etc.
- Weather forecasting (fusing physical models, historical data, remote sensing data, etc.)
- Privacy computing in energy trading markets (secure multi-party computation, federated learning)
- Advanced remote sensing technologies for distributed renewable energy systems
- Social sensing and smart meter (IoTs)
- Mobility data mining and smart charging (V2G)
- AI based-emission accounting and advanced economic and market models
