Speaker: Rabab Haider

Title: Designing Retailelectricity markets for future clean energy grids

Abstract: The rise of consumer adopted distributedresources is resulting in an increasingly intelligent grid-edge, with computational and communication capabilities distributed throughout the grid. These resources can be leveraged to provide much needed flexibility and distributed control at fast timescales through the provision of a suite of services. We propose a retail electricity market as the necessary transactive energy framework to realize these services towards enhancing grid operation. The retail market leverages distributed optimization to coordinate the control actions of resources through a real-time energy price, termed the distribution-level Locational Marginal Prices (d-LMPs). The market is overseen by a Distribution System Operator, an independent and regulated entity. First, we evaluate the market performance against existing retail practices, using data from ISO-NE and Eversource in Massachusetts. Preliminary results show the retail market increases resource utilization, and can significantly lower electricity rates for customers from 11.4 c/kWh to 2.9 c/kWh. Second, we propose a pricing strategy for reactive power in networks with high solar PV penetration. Our simulations show that solar PV can provide upwards of 40% of reactive power loads with limited price volatility as PV penetration increases, and average voltages can be increased by 2% without any overvoltage issues. Our markets can thus support the integration of DERs into the grid, bringing us closer to a low-carbon reality.

Speaker bio: Rabab Haider is a PhD Candidate at MIT. Her research focuses on power systems operation under deep decarbonization with an emphasis on grid-edge intelligence in distribution grids, physics-informed machine learning for power systems, and the design of future electricity markets. Rabab is an MIT Energy Fellow, and past recipient of the MathWorks-MIT Mechanical Engineering Fellowship, and Raj V Tahil Fellowship Fund Award.
