Title: Technology innovationsand digital technologies for low carbon transition: the role of Big Tech
internet companies

Abstract: Technology innovations and application ofdigital technologies are essential for low carbon transition. Researches show digital use can deliver up to 20% of greenhouse gas reductions by 2050. This would be achieved via enhancing energy efficiency in carbon-intensive processes and buildings, as well as managing renewable energy using artificial intelligence powered by cloud computing. In particular, Big Tech (internet companies), through their digital platforms and power of algorithms, can have large impacts on consumers, business and society as a whole in persuing the goal of carbon neutrality.

Speaker bio: Dr. Zhai graduated from Departmentof Thermal Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1983. Subsequently he studied in Institute of Energy Policy and Economics Grenoble, France, and received PHD
in Energy Economics in 1989. He joined Asian Development Bank in September 2000 and served as Chief of Energy Sector Group at ADB. In July 2021, he joined Tencent as Senior Advisor in Strategy Development Department.
