Speaker: Wenjia Cai

Title: The importance of a health-centered climatepolicy design: learnings from the China Lancet Countdown report

Abstract: Technology innovations and application ofdigital technologies are essential for low carbon transition. Researches show digital use can deliver up to 20% of greenhouse gas reductions by 2050. This would be achieved via enhancing energy efficiency in carbon-intensive processes and buildings, as well as managing renewable energy using artificial intelligence powered by cloud computing. In particular, Big Tech (internet companies), through their digital platforms and power of algorithms, can have large impacts on consumers, business and society as a whole in persuing the goal of carbon neutrality.

Speaker bio: Wenjia Cai is an associate professor of global change economics in Department of Earth System Science, Tsinghua University, China. Her research focuses on the health and economic impacts of action and inaction on climate change, as well as the design of carbon neutrality pathways. She has been an author on 100+ peer-reviewed publications. She is now the director of The Lancet Countdown Regional Centre for Asia.
